The Noisy Brain, is a growing global community collaboration of recording artists, writers, people with Mental or Emotional Health Issues and fantastic supporters. In collaboration, we are helping to break the stigma of mental health.
We encourage people to share their mental and emotional health experiences as 'writings'. Then in collaboration with fantastic musicians from all over the world we turn those 'writings' into lyrics and lyrics into songs.
Writing stuff down is an amazing release and creative outlet. You don’t need to be a poet or musician. We’re certainly not! Writing is a powerful way to let stuff out and open conversation up. There are only positives - from feeling less alone to inspiring others to do the same.
It’s not just a normalisation of the topic through discussion, it’s a celebration of human experiences.
Or, as we say -
Creating a more forgiving world,
One lyric One song at a time.
All proceeds help us to help others.

"I'm very excited to share with you "Small Boat" in a stripped-back rendition performed live. This song was written in collaboration with writer, Nick Kira with whom I connected thanks to @thenoisybrain - a community aimed to help destigmatise mental health discussion through creativity and music.” - Billy Crabbe (musician)
"‘Shouting at strangers’ was really written about shouting at my self. I just didn't know it at the time. During depression and self medicating, my identity changed to a confused angry person. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was angry with myself. My anger was being deflected onto the flaws I saw within others, arguments with friends, family and strangers increased regularity. I could see how quickly this situation could disintegrate into a worsening lifestyle, and I felt I could easily be one step away from the street. ” - Stu (contributing writer)
"My brain is super noisy. I'm from the 80s born to a family of concrete workers. I barely know anything about mental health and have quietly fought battles alone all my life. Only since Covid changed the world have I become more aware of the importance of mental health awareness for mental health. We're all in this world together! So, I loved The Noisy Brain project as soon as I saw the name and the yellow colour. Love that. I had a great time working on my song "Hold Fast" for this collaboration. I learned a lot about myself and the shared struggles of others.” - Malleus Incus Stapes (musician)
"This was written about a year after I came out of hospital (mental health unit in Surrey) and I was frustrated as I felt nothing much had changed, and I was on all these meds, which were sapping my soul - killing my personality.
It's pretty raw, but it's the truth." - NickK
"Depression is lonely, yet, at the same time, you long to be alone. The journey in a small boat, away from everybody, seemed to represent this. ” - NickK (contributing writer)
“I was struck by the lyrics of Small Boat, written and submitted by The Noisy Brain community member NickK. It tells the story of a sailor who is adrift at sea and eventually finds a beach on an island where he can rest and collect his thoughts,” - Mackenzie/This Mad Desire
"Another metaphor for the struggle that is depression. I thought of a walk I went on, in north Wales, where I was headed up a mountain/hill and suddenly the weather took a turn for the worse. I was ill prepared (not coat, jeans) and every step seemed to take an eternity and/or result in pain. This, to me, is what depression is like." - NickK
"I'm fascinated by the idea of nothing, as there's no such thing - nothing has to be something. Whether it's imagined as darkness, pure white, or transparency, that's still something. So, can nothing really exist?" - NickK
